Mosque in Srinagar

Provisional programme (to be confirmed):

1. day (20.8): flight (Sunday night, to arrive Monday early morning) I will suggest flights, so we arrive around the same time
2. day (21.8): arrival New Delhi early morning, late morning or lunchtime flight to Srinagar and transport to house boat on Dal Lake, where we will stay. Two nights in Srinagar (1,585 m).
3. day (22.8): Time to rest and for sightseeing in Srinagar: old mosques, Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, old city. Opportunity to do some shopping of the beautiful artefacts made in Kashmir.
4. day (23.8): Early morning boat ride to floating gardens and market. In afternoon drive with Jeeps to Pahalgam (2 hrs), 2 nights Pahalgam (2,740 m).
5. day (24.8): All day trek
6. day (25.8.): Afternoon drive back to Srinagar (2 hrs). Night in Srinagar.
7. day (26.8.): Drive via Kargil and Fotula Pass (4,090 m) to Lamayuru, one of the oldest Kagyu monasteries in Ladakh. Night in Lamayuru (3,500 m). (6 – 7 hrs drive) leave around 6 am.
8. day (27.8): Morning in Lamayuru, after Lunch drive to Alchi. Night in Alchi. (2 hr drive)
9. day (28.8): Morning in Alchi, an old monastery, famous for its stunningly beautiful wall paintings. Short drive to Leh (2 hrs) via Basgo Monastery. Three nights in Leh (3,500 m).
10. – 11. day (29. – 30.8): Time for visits of various monasteries, including Thikse for morning ceremony, the Shanti Stupa, Leh palace and old town. Also, visits to some organisations that concern themselves with the ecological development of Ladakh.
12. day (31.8): Early morning flight to Chandigarh, drive to Dharamsala, arrival there in afternoon. Three nights in Dharamsala.
13. – 14. day (1. – 2.9): Dharamsala: Temple of the Dalai Lama and many places important in this Tibetan Colony. Excursions around the area. Possibly a meeting with the Karmapa, if it can be arranged.
15. – 16. day (3. – 4.9): Drive to Bir (3hrs), two nights there, visiting monasteries. Visit Tenzin Palmo’s Nunnery, and interview with her, if she is available.
17. – 18. day (5. – 6.9): Drive to Tso Pema (Rewalsar), a place connected with Guru Rimpoche, Padmasambhava, who introduced Buddhism into Tibet in the 8th century. Visiting monasteries and caves where he and Yeshe Tsogyal, his foremost female student, meditated (two nights).
19. day (7.9.): Drive to Amritsar (about 6-7 hrs). Night in Amritsar
20. day (8.9.): Early morning viewing of the Golden Temple. Shopping. Night Train to Delhi
21. day (9.9.): Rest and local shopping in Delhi. Evening transfer to airport. Night flight home.
22. day (10.9.): Arrival in home country
